Meet Edith. A LWB T6 Shuttle.

Build Timeline

Organised Chronologically (from most recent to oldest), here is a list of all the work I have done to Edith to turn her from 9 seater Shuttle to Camper / Day Van. The ‘read more’ links will take you to more detailed articles that should help anyone also doing a conversion, whether that is on a T6/T5 (they are similar internally) or Kombi/Shuttle (number of seats and spec level differ slightly but the techniques on show can easily be adapted). If I make a product that is used in the build, you will also find direct links to my online store.

Progress Check – Sept 2021

Following on from my original Progress Post I thought an update was in order… It’s not only nice, but I believe it’s really important to look at how far you have progressed in a project. This make is bigger than I imagined and taking longer than I hoped so I…Read More

Tailgate Awning – v1

I’ve had this project in my mind for some time and couldn’t work out some of the finer details ‘on paper’ so this weekend, whilst carpeting and ‘properly’ installing my tailgate ply and blind, I decided to just give it a go with some ripstop nylon that I had lying…Read More

Tailgate – Plywood, New Strap and Storage Bungee

I finally got round to ‘finishing’ my tailgate interior. Having looked like the picture to the right for a few months, uncovered and with a little too much gaffer tape on show, and the Ikea blind temporarily installed, and the top of the ply not fixed (because I was too…Read More

Centre Console (v1)

Since changing my cab seats from 2+1 to a pair of Captains Chairs with swivel bases we have had nowhere to put things like drinks or snacks and other essential items on long journeys. As the seats need to swivel and we like to be able to get through to…Read More

Rear Sliding Tray

This is the foundation of my internal bike storage. A 1300mm long drawer/tray that slides out full length, rated to 150kg. The bikes will have some kind of upright and wheel trays to be loaded onto outside the van and then secured for transit before being slid inside to fit…Read More

Sliding Door Ikea Blind Pod

Having fitted Ikea Blinds to the rear quarters, the plan was always to do the same on both sliding doors and the tailgate. I decided to keep the OEM trim on the sliding doors rather than replace it with plywood so I needed to add a frame to the top…Read More

Hot Water System (Initial Install)

I chose a hot water heating system that adds on to my Planar Night Heater from Bobil Vans. It’s a simple yet surprisingly effective system that uses heat exchangers to heat water from the hot air blown by the night heater. I have used it 4 or 5 times now…Read More

Progress Check – July 2021

Up until recently I have felt quite overwhelmed at all the major jobs to be done. It felt like there was too much to write down so I have been holding a lot of it in my head. Having broken the back of it and had the first night away…Read More

Swivel Seats

Now I have replaced my front bench with a single captain’s seat (see this post for more info on that!) I can install a pair of swivel bases. I decided on the Kiravans Offset Swivels as they got some excellent reviews, specifically around lack of rattles and ease of rotation,…Read More

First Overnighter

Our first 2 nights away went brilliantly. The bed was very comfy and the Ikea blinds in the rear, combined with Fuel Lagoon Thermal Screens, kept out the light really well in the morning. We ‘camped’ on a relative’s drive for a birthday BBQ as it was a nice ‘safe’…Read More

New Seat Day!

When I originally purchased the Van, there was, as with anything, an endless list of options. Finding the right combination of mileage, spec, condition and features etc was a nightmare! I looked at so many vans as I am sure anyone with a Transporter can relate. One thing I had…Read More

Pop Top, Electrics and Night Heater

Collected Edith from DUB Buses today complete with her new hat, electrics and Diesel Night Heater. I chose to go with Dan and his amazing team at DUB Buses because of the unique vans he builds showcased on the company’s facebook page. I had a chat over messenger and then…Read More

Rear Heater Conversion

I have modified the rear HVAC unit in my Shuttle to accept standard Hot Air ducting. I removed the plastic panels to replace them with plywood and therefore lost the use of the vents. I wanted to reinstate this functionality and give myself the option of positioning the outlets in…Read More

Bed Modification 1; Anchor Point

The folding bed needs to be secured to the side of the van. This is usually done in the centre of the frame, but because I haven’t decided on what exactly I am doing with my roof/ceiling yet (probably getting a pop-top fitted in due course), I am having to…Read More

Bed Collection Day

After several weeks of waiting it was finally time to drive up to Huddersfield to meet Craig and collect my bed and furniture frames. We were now entering the early stages of the COVID-19 second wave in the UK so I was nervous that BoJo et al would put the…Read More

Rear Heater Mod – Cupboard Frame Order

A few weeks after placing my order with Craig from Flatout Camper Beds, whilst working on other areas of the van conversion I placed an additional order for a 3rd frame that would box in the rear heater of my Shuttle and provide valuable cupboard space for coats etc. Again…Read More

Flatout Camper Beds Order Placed

Ordered the bed and 2 frames today! Whoop.

Campervan Blind Installation

I wanted the neat look of a recessed blind in my LWB VW T6 Shuttle, but without the price tag of a pre-built unit. As I was going to carpet and ply line my van walls anyway it was quite straightforward to add this functionality. Having spent (too) many hours…Read More

Choosing Layout – Start with the Bed

Introduction I want my van to be flexible. It needs to work as a Day Van for trips out with bikes and muddy shoes or to travel to see friends and family across the country, yet remain usable as a basic van if I need to haul ‘big things’ about.…Read More

Inaugural Picnic

Little outing to Bakewell via the Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop. The double front bench with a folding hinge makes a brilliant picnic table. Only had the van 2 days but love the freedom already. Even a wee trip out for some lunch is an adventure and in COVID world that…Read More

New Van Day

I didn’t have any champagne on hand to christen the new ship… we raised a can of beer instead (on the drive, Karen!) My dream of finally owning a camper has commenced. Here is how she looks today… I expect her to change a fair bit over the next few…Read More

Campervan Blind

I wanted the neat look of a recessed blind in my LWB VW T6 Shuttle, but without the price tag of a pre-built unit. As I was going to carpet and ply line my van walls anyway it was quite straightforward to add this functionality. The fun part was designing and 3D printing a new mount for the Ikea Blind I chose and making a new pull from leather to allow easier opening and closing of the blind.

Van Tatts

With the help of my fantastically talented friend Mish, I have customised the tailgate on my VW T6. I saw her work on large format murals and messaged her to see if she wanted to be literally let loose on my van with a sharpie. We set a date and exchanged some ideas via Pinterest…

VW Shuttle Rear Heater Conversion

I have modified the rear HVAC unit in my Shuttle to accept standard Hot Air ducting. I removed the plastic panels to replace them with plywood and therefore lost the use of the vents. I wanted to reinstate this functionality and give myself the option of positioning the outlets in a more convenient location. I…
